Château Grey

I'm continuing my explanations of my colours.
I made this colour for three reasons
One:
based on the pigment Terre Verte meaning green earth found in Italy, France, Cyprus, Hungary...and the USA. American Shaker box painted simply possibly using natural green earth pigment found in parts of the USA
Two:
It's the colour that was used as an underpainting in old master paintings for flesh - glazed over with red and pink tones - sometimes the reds have faded so the face just looks green!
Three:
In house painting it was known as Drab and was made from mixing all the left over paints together to make a base coat. The above chair is original 19th century French painted cabriole chair leg with a beautiful soft green .
Duck Egg Blue
Scandinavian Pink /Primer Red
It also works with Old White of course!
Chateau Grey is of my favourite colours and one that is useful as it's a colour but not really a colour.

Thank you for this blog. I love reading the History of colour and how you have incorporated this in to your paint palette! Amazing information! Can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteI love Chateau Grey but I know a lot of people do not because fit looks too green. I think it is just perfect!

Annie, the layered paint on that chair is awesome!

Thanx for the history lesson. It's neat to know where your color choices come from.
I just painted my first piece with that paint today! It is just wonderful. I think I am going to go over it with a little dark wax and then clear wax mixed with old white. And, there is a chair waiting for me in the garage that I plan on undercoating with the Chateau Grey with a little Duck Egg Blue dabbed here and there then over coat with Old White and distress. Your paints work so well I am sure it will look a lot like the photo of the chair leg in your blog. The other thing about Chateau Grey (at least to me up here in the winter gloom of the Pacific Northwest) is that the light causes it to look almost blue. It's a fabulous color.

ReplyDeleteLoved attending the stockists' workshop this week in my capacaity as a freelance tutor/merchandiser at one of your stockists so big thanks for that. Am addicted to the paint despite as a freelance homes interest writer/stylist having access over the past 20 years or so to trying out basically every manufacturers' paints, waxes etc free on editorial shoots.'Tis truly scrumptious.
