Hello again and I'm back after a very hectic Christmas break and a beautiful time of quiet
I'm continuing my explanations of my colours.
Château Grey
I made this colour for three reasons
One:
based on the pigment Terre Verte meaning green earth found in Italy, France, Cyprus, Hungary...and the USA. American Shaker box painted simply possibly using natural green earth pigment found in parts of the USA
Two:
It's the colour that was used as an underpainting in old master paintings for flesh - glazed over with red and pink tones - sometimes the reds have faded so the face just looks green!
Three:
In house painting it was known as Drab and was made from mixing all the left over paints together to make a base coat. The above chair is original 19th century French painted cabriole chair leg with a beautiful soft green .
It also works with Old White of course!
Chateau Grey is of my favourite colours and one that is useful as it's a colour but not really a colour.

I just received this color from my husband as a Christmas present! He gives the best gifts! Can't wait to use it! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLove the Chateau Grey and how it works with the other colours,Annie! I took a ASCP workshop at Tawnya Norton's C'est Moi and I been searching for some pieces to paint. Thank you for this blog. I love reading the History of colour and how you have incorporated this in to your paint palette! Amazing information! Can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteI love Chateau Grey but I know a lot of people do not because fit looks too green. I think it is just perfect!
ReplyDeleteHello Annie.....I think this will be my next color to play with! I love the background history of all your colors, makes me look at them in a new way.

Annie, the layered paint on that chair is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna mess around with creating that effect. Love the green peaking through.
Thanx for the history lesson. It's neat to know where your color choices come from.
I just painted my first piece with that paint today! It is just wonderful. I think I am going to go over it with a little dark wax and then clear wax mixed with old white. And, there is a chair waiting for me in the garage that I plan on undercoating with the Chateau Grey with a little Duck Egg Blue dabbed here and there then over coat with Old White and distress. Your paints work so well I am sure it will look a lot like the photo of the chair leg in your blog. The other thing about Chateau Grey (at least to me up here in the winter gloom of the Pacific Northwest) is that the light causes it to look almost blue. It's a fabulous color.
