Tim Gould's Memory Table

Please join me in giving the wonderful Tim Gould a round of applause. Tim has been working with me for the past few months as one of my Painters in Residence, and today I am sharing the last project created during his residency. Tim has developed a technique using my paint, Chalk Paint® and homemade vinyl stencils to apply text to furniture - to give it a voice of it's own, and to bring out it's real character.

Tim had this table for years, but its glass top had been smashed in an accident and was covered in stains and marks accumulated over the years. But these marks of age and the memories that accompanied them inspired Tim to give this table this wonderful transformation.

To achieve this look, Tim created word and image stencils on a computer, printed them on to vinyl, and applied them to the table surface. (The stencils are actually being used here in a reversed way - the stencil masks the details and shapes (the text and images)). Tim then painted over the table (and the areas that have been masked off with his stencils). To create a patina that looked brimming with history, Tim applied layers of paint - starting with Pure, Emperor's Silk, Provence and finishing with Graphite. He then sanded areas of the paint back to reveal the various colours beneath.

The words and shapes were highlighted by applying Loose Brass Leaf to the area around them. Once dry, Tim carefully peeled back the stencils/ masked areas to expose the letters and shapes.

To finish the piece, Tim covered the legs with Loose Brass Leaf, and then applied my Clear Soft Wax with a little Dark Soft Wax to add depth.

Have you got an old piece of furniture, whose marks of age could be turned in to a feature with a little Chalk Paint®?

Yours, Annie

Tim Gould's Objectabletable

Here's the latest project from my British Painter in Residence, Tim Gould. You might remember that he works as an artist under the name Objectables. Well, here he's created the Objectabletable – a table with attitude!

This cheeky piece of furniture has its own Twitter account (@objectabletable) and it undergoes constant makeovers, highlighting the way that people share their opinions across social media channels – and everyone knows how much I love social media!

Tim tends to work with stencils and always creates his own. For this, he created the lettering on his computer and printed it out on vinyl. He gave the table top a light sand to remove any varnish before applying his stencil. He then created a stain with my paint in Graphite – diluting the paint and applying it onto the surface before wiping it away almost instantly. Tim did this three times, gradually leaving a build-up of colour around the stencil. He applied a bit more paint in some areas to create an uneven patina.

I love the legs on this table too – he painted them with a pattern made of hashtags, again in Graphite. He also gilded the edge of the table in with silver leaf. Tim then finished the piece with a couple of coats of my Clear Soft Wax.

So what do you think? Are you going to tweet anything to Objectabletable? Maybe it will tweet you back!

Yours, Annie

Tim Gould's "WOW" Side table

The third project from my fantastic Painter in Residence, Tim Gould, is this mid-century side table, painted with my paint, Chalk Paint® to create a geometric pattern that spells out the word "wow".

Tim started by painting the side table in Pure – a cool clean white from the Chalk Paint® palette – that creates a crisp contrast with bright colours. As the paint dried, Tim worked on his amazingly fun stencilled detail. The pattern for the piece was created in Adobe Illustrator, and is made up of individual stencils which piece together to create an overall image.

Using his stencils, Tim began to paint the triangle shapes in. He started at the right end of the sideboard, using my colours Henrietta and Florence to work from right to left, along the front of the sideboard. He added a little Pure to each colour as he worked to create a gradient – going from dark to light, right to left.

Tim sealed his masterpiece with my Clear Soft Wax, and then, to give the paintwork character and texture, he lightly sanded the painted triangles back to reveal a little of the Pure below. One last coat of wax to seal et voila!

Tim Gould's dream cupboard

For his second Painters in Residence project, Tim Gould was inspired by Mexican art to transform a kitchen cabinet into a bold statement piece using Chalk Paint®.

Tim started by creating a neutral background using Country Grey and Paris Grey, and then highlighted the doors and panels with French Linen. Using Graphite – a soft black from the Chalk Paint® palette – he painted the frames around the doors to create a border. Then, with a small artists brush, Tim softened the edges of the frames by applying small dots of lighter colours that were also used on different areas of the cupboard.

Tim created his illustrations on Adobe Illustrator and printed them on to vinyl to use as stencils. He painted these in with Barcelona Orange, Antibes Green, Provence, English Yellow, Emile and other bright colours from my colour palette. He outlined each image in Graphite and then hand-painted dots and other embellishments to pull everything together.

Finally, Tim painted inside the left-hand cupboard in Graphite, and inside the right in Pure, adding a cartoon image with typography in each. I love how the result reflects Tim's distinctive wit and personality.

Tim Gould's "G Plan" table

The first project from my latest Painter in Residence, Tim Gould, is this fabulously witty table – painted in my paint, Chalk Paint®!

Tim bought this table from a man advertising it as "G Plan". On closer inspection, Tim suspected this may not have been true, which inspired him to write the words on the top. Tim always starts his projects by creating the design for his piece of furniture on Adobe Illustrator. He then prints his designs out on to vinyl – creating the stencils that he'll use on the piece.

As this is a mid-century style piece of furniture, Tim used a retro palette of Emperor's Silk, Florence, Provence and Arles to create the stripes that run across the table legs and the slats below. The same colours are used on the intersecting geometric pattern that frames the typography on the table top. The typography is Pure White – a crisp white that forms a stark contrast against the wood. Tim finished the piece by applying Clear Soft Wax – the first coat was brushed on before the stencil was removed to avoid any shift in colour. A second coat was applied after the stencil was removed to make the piece really durable.
Have you ever used Chalk Paint® to give your furniture a voice?

From Painter in Residence Tim Gould

"My name is Tim Gould and I work under the name Objectables. A couple of years ago, whilst looking for a new kitchen table I found that it is was impossible to buy anything which hadn't been “improved”. The improvements were usually a slap of paint and what appeared to be a technique of blindfolding yourself, spinning round a few times then attacking the item with a power sander. I was informed by one of the many junktique dealers in the area that these improvements were bringing out the character of the furniture and that character cost quite a lot of money. I felt that maybe I could improve my own table (if I could find an unimproved one) and I wondered what would happen if an unloved bit of furniture really did have it's real character brought out. This led me to develop a technique using homemade vinyl stencils to apply text to the furniture and give it a voice of its own. I also relied heavily on the traditional paint and blindfolding method.

And Annie's paint?

Through my work as a set builder I had a bit of knowledge on paint techniques but I found a couple of Annie's books really helpful in getting me to a good level and I learned some really good tips. I got a website together showing a few of my first efforts and I was lucky to get mentioned in the Mad About The House blog. Annie saw my pieces and was kind enough to contact me with some nice words about my work which at that early stage was a real incentive to keep going. In the beginning I was just using any old paint left over from various jobs and projects but working with Annie's paint has really developed my style as its unique qualities offer you much more scope than regular paint.

What you’ll see from me

The core of my work will still be coming from the furniture and my search for its character but I will be trying to build on that with these pieces. I feel the point of the Painters in Residence projects is to try to stretch the capabilities of Chalk Paint® so I will endeavour to do that in my work. I will be working with some geometric patterns and will try to use some of the brighter colours in the range as I generally work in black (sometimes grey if I am being crazy). I'm really excited about the chance to experiment on some stuff and see what interesting results I can produce."
